what is sentimentality if i feel more like crying at the end of planes trains and automobiles when john candy says that his wife’s been dead the whole time than at the end of 8 1/2 when guido’s parents join that march
john candy is a more relatable figure. he laffs, he has troubles, he has good times. Gudio is much lesss what we consider human. it’s an entirely different mode of production and style of film making.
i think in their own ways both hugues/cand and fellini/mastrionii offer us a glimpse of the “sublime” even tho that term is stupid. thanks john candy and marcello mastrionni for all the gr8 memories
